Legendary aircraft, the aircraft supersonic jet experimental Bell X-1 was designed following a tender in February 1945 from the U.S. Army Air Force and Nationaladvisory Committee for Aeronautics (NASA future). The first flight with the engine turned on took place on 9 December 1946. It reaches the sound barrier (1 078 km / h or Mach 1.05) at 12,800 meters on 14 October 1947, at the hands of a young 24-year-old pilot, Captain Charles "Chuck" Yeager.


Later, the X-1-1 reached its maximum speed of Mach 1.45. The X-1-2 flew for the first time on 9 December 1946, he was fitted with the same engine and was also used for test flights transonic, it was rebuilt as X-1E. The X-1-3 is arriving later, due to an engine problem. Its first flight took place on 20 July 1951 and exploded on the ground with the B-50 Superfortress that was run.


Following the incident, NACA commissioned new copies to explore the flight at Mach 2. The X-1A was an evolution of X-1 with a longer fuselage, engine and a modified cockpit redesigned. The X-1A broke some records: the speed on 12 December 1953 with Mach 2435, the altitude on 26 August 1954 with 27,566 m. The aircraft was lost due to an explosion before dropping the B-50 Superfortress, forcing him to release him prematurely. The X-1B was used to study the heat of friction, it carried out 27 flights. The X-1D was also lost in an explosion in flight in the same circumstances as the X-1A. The X-1E was an X-1 rebuilt with a new cockpit and a wing changed. He reached Mach 2.24 and an altitude of 22,880 m during its 26 flights.
