Chance Vought F4U CorsairChance Vought F4U Corsair (1943)

The F4U was one of the most famous fighter of the Pacific War. The design of the Corsair began early in 1938 following a specification of the U.S. Navy to replace the F4F Wildcat. The prototype XF4U-1 flew for the first time in May 1940 and was commissioned in 1942 after undergoing many changes. Finally a first order of 584 copies was passed on 30 June 1941 and the first production aircraft came out a year later. The Corsair had its baptism of fire on 13 February 1943 at Guadalcanal.

The wings of the Corsair was a flattened W, he had a fuselage profile circular shape and a large propeller. The cockpit was placed very backward and poor visibility was a serious problem. It was fast, but also knew some problems handling This "inverted gull wing" could bring the landing gear ground without unduly prolong and thus make it more resistant to the landing, despite a propeller large diameter. Finally, the wing W allowed a connection to the fuselage 90 degrees, increasing visibility from the cockpit.

In its early versions, he tended to rebound from side to side of the runway during landing, due to the stiffness of the train. This is why we withdrew from the U.S. Navy and was the first fighter board to be assigned to land bases. He equipped all units of the U.S. Marine Corps in the second half of 1943. It was not until 1944 that it was again used by the Navy, by requiring a landing approach very particular bend.

The largest deployment of Corsair took place at the Battle of Okinawa between 7 and 30 April 1944 or 305 onboard aircraft from the Navy and 192 aircraft based Marines ashore executed more than 600 support missions and créditèrent is 124 victories ... On that occasion the Corsair received its most prestigious nickname: "Sweetheart of Okinawa." The F4U was, with 2140 aerial victories, the second plane most victorious in the Pacific.

This aircraft served in the Pacific during the Second World War and the famous VMF-214 squadron of "burned head" and Colonel Gregory M. "Grandpa" Boyington was equipped. The Corsair was nicknamed the "death wheezing" by the Japanese because of the whistling caused by inlets leading edge. This aircraft was the first successful interception of an enemy aircraft being guided by a radar own. This plane was used again early in the Korean War, as the P-51 Mustang. In France, he served in Indochina and Algeria in the Navy.

It was built with 12,574 copies, all versions between 1940 and 1952. Built jointly by Chance-Vought (ca. 7800 copies series F4U-1, F4U-4, F4U-5 and AU-1), Goodyear (4,000 FG-1A and FG-1D) and Brewster (735 F3A), it is engaged in combat by the British Fleet Air Arm (2,000 copies) and the Royal New Zealand Air Force (425 aircraft) during the war. After that, it will be acquired by France and later by various countries in South and Central America such as Argentina, Honduras or El Salvador who acquire former model FG-1D, F4U-4 and F4U-5.
